Druids were people in ancient Britain and France who served a wide variety of roles — “philosophers, teachers, judges, the repository of communal wisdoms about the natural world and the traditions of the people, and the mediators between humans and the gods,” writes Barry Cunliffe in his book “Druids: A Very Short Introduction” (Oxford University Press, 2010). The song features a quotation in French taken from Lucan's Pharsalia (1656), translated by Brebeuf- mentioned in Cunliffe's book.
lyrics
Temple Des Druides (Music: Tim Hunter, Lyrics: Tim Hunter/Thierry Sportouche)
The religion we once shared
It’s not gone – it's still there
Down a windy misty path
You’ll face the Druid’s wrath
Temple Des Druides
Don’t do what they forbid
You’re gonna pay for what you did
Don’t do what they forbid
The old order has returned
They’re angry we’ve not learned
Temple Des Druides, Temple Des Druides
And they’re wearing their white robes
In the Wooded Grove
Chorus:
Temple Des Druides
Don’t do what they forbid
You’re gonna pay for what you did
[spoken ]
Temple Des Druides
Don’t do what they forbid
Temple Des Druides
Don’t do what they forbid
The old order has returned
They’re angry that we’ve not learned
Translation:
Refrain:
In the midst of silence and lonely woods,
Nature secretly opens its mysteries to them
The neighbours of this wood so wild and so dark leave to its demons its horror and its shade, And the druid fears when he approaches these places to see that he adores and to find his gods there
